Abstract

This study seeks to analyze the public policies relevant to the implementation and enforcement of the right to remission of sentence through reading in the state of São Paulo, with a view to characterizing the right of people deprived of their liberty to remit days of sentence by reading literary works. In this sense, the research aims to understand the obstacles that today make up the prison scenario with regard to the state's inertia in implementing reading projects in prisons, so that they are at the mercy of private initiative and the humanistic inclinations of a few select professionals within the prison system. At this juncture, the scope of this work will be to see what mechanisms are necessary and urgent in this area, which will allow this right to be truly understood and realized for prisoners. Based on a qualitative-deductive study, a review of the literature on the subject is carried out and an attempt is made to understand how the projects for reprieve through reading have succeeded in practice.
